Spring Roundup 5/2-4

By Neil H. Devlin, Mullen Sports Information Director
Girls tennis runs through regional rounds; baseball splits; girls golf shortened again; lacrosse and soccer suffer defeats in the final week of the 2023 regular season.

Mullen girls tennis earned another high-end ace on Thursday, dominating as host of Class 4A Region 3 at Pinehurst Country Club.

I’m very pleased,” Mustangs head coach Jera Sturgell said. “Everybody played amazing and showed what they can do.”

In order, Mullen’s singles are Lexi Yost, Lilly Evans and Savanna Hanley. Doubles are Grace Brouillette-Avery Walters, Clara Dailey-Claire Lenich, Anna Lawrence-Maisie McMorrow and Emma Lehman-Grace Jeffers. They won six-of-seven lines and finished runner-up in the other to advance to Pueblo, where they will be in the second year of individual brackets. There will be 16 entries in each of the three singles and four doubles groups from May 11-13 at the southern city’s City Park.

In addition, the Mustangs are in the second year of the 4A team bracket, where they have made the semifinals after easily handling Thomas Jefferson and Discovery Canyon. They will host Thompson Valley on Tuesday, May 9, 2 p.m.

And the individual brackets, also consisting of 16 spots, are scheduled for release on Monday,
May 8.

“You just hope everything comes together and it is,” Sturgell said.

The Mustangs, she insists, have gotten progressively better throughout 2023 and also overcome the usual weather difficulties as well as unexpected court problems (Mullen has been off-campus since the start of the spring).

“The girls have been great,” the coach added. “I have such a good feeling about them.”
